"Beastly" Review
Title: "Beastly"Director: Daniel Barnz
Writer: Daniel Barnz
Stars: Alex Pettyfer, Venessa Hudgens, and Mary-Kate Olsen
Released: March 2011
A modern-day take on the "Beauty and the Beast" tale where a New York teen is transformed into a hideous monster in order to find true love.
What I Love
This movie really reminds me of "A Cinderella Story" with Hilary Duff and that hot guy whose name escapes me. Not in the sense that it was any similar in plot, but in the moder-day-Disney-Princess-remake thing. And, man, did this movie nail it. It's awfully hard to redo a story that everyone knows and still keep it new, original, and captivating. This movie did a great job keeping to the original story, but really made it workable in the modern sense. It's a little bit on the sappy time at parts, but managed to throw in some comedy when needed.I really wasn't expecting much from this in the beginning. I very much expected another teenage chick flick. That is sort of what I got, but I was very impressed with the quality. The end was happy and fitting, which should keep all the Beauty and the Beast fans happy.
What I Hate
The only thing I can come up with that I would change about this movie is a bit of the sappy parts. Some were a little over the top such as the elephant video scene. Honestly I thought that was a little strange. And Alex Pettyfer stalking Venessa Hudgens bit really got me thinking back to Edward Cullen in Twilight, which wasn't really where I wanted to go. Other than these things though, I can't really judge it on any other negative front.Overall
Must see? If you're a "Beauty and the Beast" fan.Would you see it again? Considering buying it to add to my DVD collection as soon as it comes out.
Recommended for the teenage crowd or anyone who loves a good old fashioned romance.
